New Year’s Resolution
Every year we feel compelled to make a New Year’s resolution.
We may even put our resolution online, on our social media pages. But I have never seen a mate’s resolution to stop viewing pornography posted on his social media page. This is not surprising.
From my personal experience God breaks habits. All you have to do is admit to God that this habit is wrong and that you want to stop doing it. Habits that are wrong and that I overcame include a daily pornography addiction, getting drunk every couple of days if not daily and swearing. When I confessed to God my sins and asked for help to overcome my addictions I received healing. With two sins (which were daily long-term habits that I had engaged in for decades) I stopped engaging in those habits immediately. With other sins (which were also habits) I went through a period of detox. It was difficult and I craved the habits while detoxing.
One of the best parts of being a Christian is that when we do fail or fall short of God’s will for our lives we can ask for forgiveness immediately. We don’t need to wait until the new year to recommit or commit to a new goal. God’s mercies are new every morning (Lamentations 3:22-23). We can ask for forgiveness immediately and move forward.
Guilt is a powerful emotion. It is a reminder that God has established boundaries that are good. The boundaries are there for our benefit. God wants us to live within these boundaries and not live in sin nor be controlled by sinful habits. When we sin, we feel distant from God. We need to remove the sin through confession to get back on track and live as God wants us to (Ephesians 4:23).
