The Challenge of Sexuality
Sexual immorality is not a new issue for Christians. Various forms of sexual immorality are recorded in the Bible, in historical figures, in our friends lives and unfortunately in our lives.
In Acts 15 we read how early Church founders knew that being a Christian wasn’t easy. A small group Early Church members wanted to impose some of the Old Testament laws on new Christian believers. The thinking was that ‘rules’ were a good idea. It provided structure for people to live by. A hui was held to discuss how to reply to these emerging ideas.
The result from the hui is what we read in Acts 15:20 ‘Instead we should write to them, telling them to abstain from …. sexual immorality… you will do well to avoid these things.’ This was the command because sexual immorality is a sin. It’s a sin that existed back then and continues to exist now. If we were to be honest with ourselves, we would admit that we are all tempted with sexual sin.
Early Church leaders knew that sexual sin went against God’s plans for our lives. Sexual sin resulted in strife throughout the Old Testament. Samson and King David are examples of men who fell into temptation and sinned sexually. The result in Samson’s life was his imprisonment and ultimately his death. King David’s infidelity resulted in the death of the husband of his mistress, broken relationships amongst his children along with other outcomes that he never foresaw.
Sexual sin continues to be a major area that we struggle with. Advertising contains sexually alluring images, porn is readily available online (and it is free to access,) sexual permissiveness exists amongst couples before marriage, in marriage and outside of marriage.
Thankfully the grace found in Jesus Christ helps us to overcome our temptations when we trust Jesus and choose to live accordingly to His Word. I know that when I fall into temptation and sin that Jesus’ grace allows for confession of my sin and forgiveness. This is why I am grateful that I live now and not 3000 years ago.
I am also grateful that support exists from committed Christians that helped me overcome my longstanding behaviours that are / were immoral. I reached out to ‘No Longer Broken’ for support and overtime I have been freed from these behaviours that I engaged in for close to 25 years. If you are ready to ask for help and seek support in changing your life please contact ‘No Longer Broken.’
