THE 8 R’S TO FREEDOM FROM PORN – STEP 8: RESTORE

We are now at the final ‘R’. After a person has walked through the first seven “Rs” on the journey to freedom, the final step is just as vital: RESTORE.
Restoration is not merely an optional extra; it is the natural fruit of the Gospel. When God sets a person free from the chains of pornography and sexual addiction, He never intends that freedom to be hidden or hoarded. Freedom is meant to overflow. It is meant to become a lifeline for others who are still trapped in the same darkness we once knew.
To restore, in the context of this journey, means stepping into the privilege of helping someone else find the same freedom God has begun in us. The Lord paid the ultimate price so that we could walk clean, whole, and restored. And part of honouring that gift is allowing Him to use our story, our healing, and even our past brokenness to bring comfort and hope to others.
2 CORINTHIANS 1:3–6
“All praise to God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. God is our merciful Father and the source of all comfort. He comforts us in all our troubles so that we can comfort others. When they are troubled, we will be able to give them the same comfort God has given us. For the more we suffer for Christ, the more God will shower us with his comfort through Christ. Even when we are weighed down with troubles, it is for your comfort and salvation! For when we ourselves are comforted, we will certainly comfort you. Then you can patiently endure the same things we suffer.”
The more deeply we have been broken by sexual addiction, and the more powerfully God has begun to set us free, the more clearly we can recognise the pain in others. Those who have walked through the shame, secrecy, and spiritual heaviness of pornography, are uniquely equipped to reach those still bound by it. Restoration becomes a natural outflow of gratitude — a desire to see others experience the same mercy, cleansing, and transformation we have tasted.
Restoration does not require perfection. If perfection were the requirement, none of us would ever qualify. But wisdom is essential. It is unwise, and even hypocritical to attempt to minister to others in the area of sexual healing if we are still falling regularly ourselves. Yet once a person can honestly say they are walking in real freedom — resisting temptation, renewing the mind, and experiencing victory more consistently than ever before — then they are in a place to begin strengthening others.
PSALM 51:10–13
“Create in me a clean heart, O God. Renew a loyal spirit within me. Do not banish me from your presence, and don’t take your Holy Spirit from me. Restore to me the joy of your salvation, and make me willing to obey you. Then I will teach your ways to rebels, and they will return to you.”
This is the pattern: God cleanses, restores, renews — then we teach others. Temptation may still come, but temptation itself is not sin. What matters is that the mind is no longer the same battleground it once was. When the grip of pornography is broken and the heart is being renewed, God begins to entrust us with the privilege of helping others rise.
The Scriptures speak boldly about restoration, and one of the clearest passages is found in Isaiah. It reveals not only God’s heart for the oppressed but also the blessings that flow when His people step into the work of restoring others.
ISAIAH 58:6–14
“Is this not the fast that I have chosen: To loose the bonds of wickedness; to undo the heavy burdens; to let the oppressed go free, and that you break every yoke? Is it not to share your bread with the hungry, and that you bring to your house the poor who are cast out; when you see the naked, that you cover him, and not hide yourself from your own flesh? THEN your light shall break forth like the morning; your healing shall spring forth speedily, and your righteousness shall go before you. The glory of the LORD shall be your rear guard. Then you shall call, and the LORD will answer; you shall cry, and He will say, ‘Here I am.’ If you take away the yoke from your midst, the pointing of the finger, and speaking wickedness; if you extend your soul to the hungry, and satisfy the afflicted soul, THEN your light shall dawn in the darkness, and your darkness shall be as the noonday. The LORD will guide you continually, and satisfy your soul in drought, and strengthen your bones. You shall be like a watered garden, and like a spring of water, whose waters do not fail.”
God makes it unmistakably clear: spiritual disciplines matter, but they are incomplete without compassion, generosity, and a willingness to lift the oppressed. Pornography and sexual addiction are among the most oppressive bondages of our generation. When God frees us, He invites us to become part of His rescue mission for others.
The key word in this passage is THEN. When we give ourselves to restoring others — when we step into the lives of the broken, the bound, and the ashamed — God pours blessing back into us. “Your healing shall spring forth speedily.” Restoration is not only something we give; it is something God multiplies back into our own lives.
But there is a warning. God sees the motives of the heart. Restoration must never become performance. It must never become a way of trying to earn approval or fill our own emotional needs. If the motive is wrong, the blessing is hindered. But when the motive is love — when we simply want others to know the freedom we have found — God breathes on it.
Restoration is the final step because it seals the work God has done. When we help others break free from pornography and sexual addiction, we reinforce our own freedom, honour the mercy we have received, and participate in the very heart of God — the heart that sets captives free.
