THE 8 R’S TO FREEDOM FROM PORN – STEP 7: REJOICE!
When a person has walked through the hard and humbling steps of breaking free from pornography and sexual addiction, there comes a step that many overlook.
Step 7 on our journey to freedom, is REJOICE! At first glance, rejoicing may seem unrelated to the gritty, painful battle of resisting sexual temptation. But in reality, rejoicing is one of the most strategic spiritual weapons God gives us in the fight for purity.
Pornography and sexual addiction thrive in environments of shame, secrecy, discouragement, and self‑hatred. Rejoicing breaks those atmospheres. It lifts the heart out of darkness and into the light of God’s presence. It shifts our focus from our weakness to His strength, from our failures to His faithfulness, from our past to His promises.
We rejoice because God deserves glory for every step of freedom He brings. We rejoice because a person who once felt trapped, dirty, or unworthy can now experience grace and mercy from a holy God who loves us deeply. He loves us as we are — but He loves us too much to leave us bound to sexual sin.
Rejoicing is not emotional hype. It is a spiritual declaration that God is at work, that freedom is possible, and that the chains of pornography do not have the final word.
Thankfulness releases a supernatural power that cements the work God has begun. When we thank Him for freedom — even before we feel fully free — we are aligning ourselves with His truth. Gratitude pulls our attention away from the pull of temptation and places it on the One who breaks its power.
One of the most effective ways to weaken the grip of pornography is to stop and thank God for the good things He has given. Pornography trains the mind to look for escape, stimulation, and self‑gratification. Thankfulness retrains the mind to look for God’s goodness, God’s presence, and God’s strength. Gratitude rewires the heart away from lust and toward worship.
But maintaining a heart of gratitude is not always easy. We live in a world saturated with negativity, pressure, and temptation. Many believers allow their emotions to dictate their level of thankfulness. Some become spiritually numb, moving through life without pausing to acknowledge God’s goodness. We can be quick to ask God for help, quick to complain about our struggles — but slow to rejoice.
Scripture makes the importance of rejoicing unmistakably clear:
PHILIPPIANS 4:4
“Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice!”
1 THESSALONIANS 5:18
“In everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.”
These verses show that rejoicing is not optional. It is not something we do only when we feel victorious or when temptation is far away. We are told to rejoice always. We are told to give thanks in everything — even in the middle of the battle, even on the days when temptation feels strong, even when we feel discouraged.
Rejoicing is God’s will for us because it strengthens our spirit and weakens the enemy’s influence. A lack of gratitude can actually slow our progress toward freedom, while a lifestyle of rejoicing accelerates it.
So when should we begin rejoicing? Immediately. Even if we still feel the pull of temptation. Even if we haven’t seen the full breakthrough yet. That is called faith — praising God for the freedom He is bringing, even before we see the complete result. Rejoicing tells God, “I believe You will finish what You started.” It builds spiritual momentum and forms a daily rhythm of praise that strengthens the soul.
The enemy hates sincere praise. Pornography loses its power in an atmosphere of worship. Lust cannot thrive in a heart that is rejoicing in God. Shame cannot survive where gratitude is overflowing. That’s why rejoicing becomes one of the most powerful weapons in resisting temptation and breaking old patterns.
A simple declaration like this becomes a spiritual battle cry:
Rejoicing is not the final step of freedom — it is the daily rhythm of a transformed life. It keeps the heart soft, the mind clear, and the spirit strong. It reminds us that freedom from pornography is not something we earn; it is something God gives. And He is worthy of continual praise.
