The Third Step Toward Freedom: REPENTENCE.
Repentance is the third “R” in the journey toward freedom. Once we recognize that we have a problem and take responsibility for it, we must repent for participating in the sin we have embraced.
The Greek word for repent is Metanoeo (me-tä-no-e’-ō). It means “to change our mind for the better…to turn from sin to God, and to be utterly repelled by our past sins.” True repentance is not simply regret or remorse-it is a complete change of mind and heart. For those caught in pornography addiction or sexual addiction, repentance means coming to a place where we no longer tolerate sin but instead hate it because we see the destruction it brings.
Many Christians in the Western Church have little understanding of what repentance truly means. Without that understanding, repentance is often neglected. The reality is that most people struggling with pornography do not hate the sin-they love it too much. Temptation comes, and instead of pausing to consider the consequences, we indulge. Yet repentance requires us to see pornography for what it is: a spiritual prison that robs us of freedom, intimacy with God, and even threatens eternal consequences if left unchecked.
Scripture is clear: “Repent, then, and turn to God, so that your sins may be wiped out, that times of refreshing may come from the Lord” (Acts 3:19). Without repentance, sins are not wiped away. Repentance is the doorway to freedom, the path to experiencing the refreshing presence of God.
Sadly, repentance is rarely preached in many churches today. Some leaders fear offending people with words like repentance, holiness, and sanctification. Others have embraced false teaching that says repentance is unnecessary because we are under grace. Yet the Bible insists that repentance is essential.
True repentance is not about words alone. Many people pray prayers of repentance, sometimes even with tears, but those tears are often tears of remorse-especially when they have been caught-rather than genuine repentance. Repentance must come from the heart. God is not interested in empty words; He looks at the condition of our heart and expects to see evidence of change.
As Matthew 3:8 says: “Prove by the way you live that you have repented of your sins and turned to God.”
Fruit always follows genuine repentance. In the case of pornography addiction or other sexual addictions, God understands the difficulty of breaking free immediately. His grace allows for the struggle, but He expects a genuine willingness to be free-a desire to do whatever is required to break free from porn and follow through on it. That is genuine repentance.
My own journey illustrates this truth. When my sexual sin was exposed, I was stood down from ministry as an Associate Pastor for more than two years. It was painful, but it was the only way God could bring me to a place of true repentance and begin the healing process.
The Bible gives us examples of false and genuine repentance. In 1 Samuel 15, Saul was commanded to completely destroy the Amalekites, yet he disobeyed. When confronted, Saul minimized his sin, partially obeyed, and blamed others. His repentance was incomplete-focused more on saving face than on pleasing God. In contrast, when Nathan confronted David about his sin with Bathsheba (2 Samuel 12:7-13), David immediately confessed, saying, “I have sinned against the LORD.” He offered no excuses, recognized the gravity of his sin, and turned back to God. Psalm 51 confirms the depth of David’s genuine repentance.
This is the kind of repentance required to break free from pornography and sexual addiction. It is not about appearances or reputation, but about a heart that truly turns from sin to God. Genuine repentance brings freedom, healing, and restoration.

Without it, you will remain wandering in the wilderness, experiencing only occasional touches from the Lord. But with genuine repentance, you can enter into the Promised Land of freedom and experience times of refreshing that come from His presence.
